Popular planning
"Now you probably know about this, but let's go over it again."

Family planning is a new phenomenon in the outer reaches of Ethiopia. Although the country doesn't hold that many people - 60 million in an area the size of Spain and France - there is in many places the problem of too many people to too little arable land.

Children are generally regarded as blessings from God - six per family are common - and it is only Oxfam's marvellously delicate approach that is managing to convince its beneficiaries that keeping numbers down is in their best interest.
